How We Picked These Destinations

Not every "great family vacation" is great for toddlers specifically. A destination that's perfect for a 7-year-old can be miserable with a 2-year-old who naps at 1 PM and melts down after 4 PM.

We ranked these spots based on what actually matters to toddler families: stroller-friendly attractions, free outdoor activities, nap-compatible schedules, short travel distances from major airports, and the availability of family-friendly restaurants that don't require a 90-minute wait.

Beach Destinations

1. San Diego, California

San Diego is the gold standard for toddler vacations. The weather is almost always perfect, the beaches are gentle, and the zoo is world-class. La Jolla Cove tidepools are free and fascinating for little ones. Read our full San Diego with kids guide.

2. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Affordable, low-key, and designed for families. The boardwalk, wide sandy beaches, and dozens of mini-golf courses make it easy to fill days without spending much. Read our Myrtle Beach family guide.

3. Honolulu, Hawaii

Yes, the flight is long — but Waikiki's calm, shallow waters and the Magic Island lagoon are toddler paradise. The pace is relaxed, the food is great, and most resorts cater to families. Read our Honolulu with kids guide.

City Vacations

4. Orlando, Florida

The obvious pick, but for good reason. Beyond the theme parks (which honestly work better for kids 4+), Orlando has excellent free splash pads, nature trails, and Lake Eola's swan boats. Read our Orlando family guide.

5. Washington, D.C.

Almost everything is free. The Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, and the zoo cost nothing. Toddlers love the dinosaur hall and the pandas. Read our D.C. with kids guide.

6. Chicago, Illinois

Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and Lincoln Park Zoo (free!) are all stroller-friendly. The deep-dish pizza alone is worth the trip. Best visited May through September. Read our Chicago family guide.

7. Boston, Massachusetts

Walkable, historic, and full of green space. Boston Common's Frog Pond, the Freedom Trail (toddlers love the cobblestones), and the New England Aquarium make it a compact, manageable city trip. Read our Boston with kids guide.

Nature & Outdoors

8. Denver, Colorado

The Denver Zoo, City Park, and easy access to Rocky Mountain trails make this a great pick for outdoorsy toddler families. The altitude takes a day to adjust to — plan a mellow first day. Read our Denver family guide.

9. Seattle, Washington

Pike Place Market is a sensory wonderland for toddlers (fish flying!). Olympic Sculpture Park is free and open. The Children's Museum at Seattle Center is excellent for rainy days. Read our Seattle with kids guide.

Theme Park & Resort Destinations

10. Anaheim, California

Disneyland's Fantasyland was literally designed for small children. The rides are gentle, the characters are everywhere, and the Disney magic hits different when your toddler sees Mickey for the first time. Read our Anaheim family guide.

11. Nashville, Tennessee

Underrated for families. Centennial Park's full-size Parthenon replica, the Nashville Zoo, and the music scene (yes, toddlers love live music) make it a fun, affordable option. Read our Nashville with kids guide.

12. San Francisco, California

Crissy Field, the Exploratorium, and Golden Gate Park's playground loop make San Francisco work surprisingly well with toddlers. Stay near Fisherman's Wharf for easy access. Read our San Francisco family guide.

Planning Your Trip

Whichever destination you pick, a few universal toddler-travel rules apply: keep driving/flying under 4 hours when possible, book accommodation with a kitchen, protect nap time, and build in at least one "nothing" day per trip.
